Vivek was a scientist at CSIRO until 2005, when the effect of yoga on his own daughter prompted him to change career path.
Vivek and Neena’s then five-year-old daughter started school, but it was a disaster. She was stressed so much so that she started throwing up at any slight change in the class routine. The class teacher finally advised them to go to a counsellor for help.
As a qualified yoga professional, Vivek decided to practice yoga with her. Neena was not at all convinced of its purpose at the time. However, father and daughter religiously did yoga every morning for 20 minutes for 3 months. At the end of the year their daughter had grown to be a very confident child with high self esteem, and the teacher called them to ask for the name of the counselor.
This was a major turning point for Vivek. He started reading a lot more about yoga for children and the science behind the benefits of it, and the school offered him the opportunity to teach yoga to years 1, 2 and 3.
Neena was expecting their second child when they took the major decision for Vivek to resign from his scientist position and become a full time ‘Yogi’, as he could see so much potential benefit for young ones.
Since then he has been teaching yoga in different Brisbane schools, and has now taught yoga to more than 2000 children. He has developed a very special program carefully designed for children based on their mental and physical age. His classes are not just postures taken from adult classes; they are dynamic and change with the mood of the children on the day.
He also runs Yoga programs for adults that include Beginners Yoga, Gentle Yoga, Intermediate Yoga, Power Yoga, Corporate Yoga and a very unique Chair Yoga program for 60 plus. In his classes he also offer very special relaxation and meditation strategies. In addition to Om Yoga Wellness Centre, he teaches yoga to staff members in various organisations in Brisbane including the University of Queensland, CSIRO, BSES, DEEDI, School teachers and IT industry, multinational companies etc.
Vivek and Neena are both academics, but yoga is their passion.
